An unchosen identity

As much as I hate to say it, injuries have been a part of my life for the better part of four years now. If you’ve been following me for a while, you know I’ve spent many hours in the gym either rehabing from an injury or from surgery.
A few weeks ago, around the same time I got a call from my doctor saying that the avulsion fracture in my right foot from October has healed (pheuw 😮💨), I injured my left knee skiing.
At first it was the right knee (2019 ➡️ surgery), then the left foot (2021 ➡️ surgery), then the right foot (2022) and now the left knee. The circle has been closed to say the least…
Every time I feel like I’ve hit rock bottom, it’s a very disheartening and energy-consuming experience. It can feel like all the work I put in to stay strong and healthy was for nothing. And the more I get injured, the easier it gets to ask questions like:
Why me?
Is there something wrong with my body? Am I sick?
Am I doing something wrong? Is there something terribly wrong with my biomechanics?
Is it those 15 years of gymnastics I did as a kid that have ruined me?
Bad luck?
Am I just not listening to my body enough?
What detail did I miss?
These are big questions and I don’t have the answer yet. I’m lucky to have the support of my family, boyfriend, friends, coach and physio — without them I honestly don’t know if I would have had the strength to keep on fighting.
And at the end of the day, that’s what I always do. I keep fighting. Not fighting against the injuries, but fighting for my dreams and what I love.
This time around I only cried for a short while until I started taking action again: towards being healthy and injury-free — and then, chasing those mountain goals.
Luckily, right now my knee is holding up very well and I’m able to run, climb and bike. So this season is looking bright still 🙂 But baby steps for now.
